Charles “Charlie” Crawford joined Hyperion Bank on August 7, 2017 and in September 2018 completed the Bank’s $18.3 million recapitalization. A champion of community banking, Charlie previously organized Private Bank of Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia, and its holding company, Private Bancshares, Inc., in 2006. A decade later, Private Bank of Buckhead was on the 2016 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies. On January 1, 2017, Charlie successfully completed the merger of Private Bank of Buckhead and its Private Bank of Decatur and PrivatePlus Mortgage divisions with National Bank of Commerce of Birmingham, Alabama. In Philadelphia, Charlie is again developing successful client and community relationships built upon his commitment to delivering superior personal service. Charlie says: “In the banking industry, products, pricing, and technology tend to be a commodity. I believe the differentiator is the people and the relationship between the client and the banker. Our best clients are those who appreciate unrestricted access to local decision-makers.”
Charlie’s first tenure in Philadelphia was at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a BA degree in Economics and a BS degree in Management from The Wharton School. He received an MBA degree from Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, which honored him in 2011 with its Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship, and also graduated from the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Banking. After launching his career with Bankers Trust Company in New York, he spent a decade with Bank South in Atlanta, then founded The Buckhead Bank in 1996, followed by Riverside Bank of Buckhead in 2001. In 2016 TiE Atlanta recognized Charlie’s success with a Top Entrepreneur award. Charlie thus welcomed the entrepreneurial opportunity to return to Philadelphia as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of community-based Hyperion Bank.
Consistent with his community focus, Charlie enjoys being active in diverse business and nonprofit organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers (PACB); and is a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of YPO and The Union League. Charlie also serves on the board of directors of McKenney’s, one of the country’s largest mechanical contractors, and is an advisor to CDE Services, a POS terminal solutions provider. In 2010 the Buckhead Business Association honored Charlie for his service on numerous boards, including Georgia State University, the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, The Carter Center, the Georgia Tennis Foundation, the Atlanta History Center and more, and as Charlie develops new relationships in the greater Philadelphia region, he welcomes engagement with companies and organizations that promote business vitality and improve the quality of life. Charlie is an avid tennis player and runner who has completed 16 full marathons.
